Raising Money-Smart Kids

Simple strategies to teach your littles about money (that actually work!)

Hey Beautiful Mama! 👋

It's Chelsey here, and today I'm sharing something that totally changed how I think about raising financially savvy kids!

You know those moments when something just clicks?

Last year, I had the absolute privilege of chatting with Amanda Barton on The Rainmaker Podcast, a successful mama entrepreneur who raised four amazing boys.

She shared something that stopped me in my tracks...

A Bold Family Decision

When her boys were just one and three (exactly where I am now with my littles!), she and her husband Joe made a bold decision.

They chose to leave their corporate jobs behind, cutting their income in half, to prioritize being present with their kids during those precious early years.

Changing It Up

At age 14, they had each of their boys create a detailed budget of their yearly expenses - from shoes to shampoo to summer camps.

Then, they gave them monthly "allowances" to manage ALL of these expenses themselves.

The result?

Their college-age son later thanked them because he watched his friends struggle with money while he felt completely prepared!

This story hit me hard because it highlights something so important...

Our kids' relationship with money starts way earlier than we think.

Here's what I've learned from Amanda's story and my own journey as a mama…

The magic happens when we're intentional about teaching our kids about money.

It's not just about giving them an allowance or teaching them to save!

It's about creating those little teachable moments in everyday life.

Think of financial literacy like learning anything!

The earlier they start learning, the more natural it becomes.

Just like how our littles pick up new words every day, they're constantly absorbing our attitudes about money, spending, and giving.

The best part?

We can make this journey fun and natural. No fancy programs needed! Just real-life moments turned into powerful learning opportunities.

Let's break this down into actionable steps you can start TODAY:

1. Make Money Conversations Natural

Ever notice how your little one copies everything you say?

Money talk should be just as natural as teaching them colors or numbers.

Here's how to weave it in:

  • At the grocery store: "These apples are $5 for a bag, but these are $3. That's $2 we can save for your LEGO fund!"

  • While shopping online: "The scooter you want is $40 today, but next week it's going on sale for $30. Let's wait and save $10!"

  • During playtime: "Let's play ice cream shop! Each scoop costs two quarters - how many can you buy with $1?"

2. Start with Simple Systems

Just like teaching the ABC's, money skills start with the basics.

The Three Jars System–Label three clear jars:

  • Save Jar (50%): Future big toys/treats ($5 from $10)

  • Spend Jar (30%): Small treats now ($3 from $10)

  • Give Jar (20%): Helping others ($2 from $10)

When the Save jar gets full, they can get something special!

3. Model Good Habits

Our littles are always watching and learning from us, especially when it comes to money!

Try these simple moves:

  • Compare prices: "I'm buying this coffee maker because it costs less per cup than Starbucks"

  • Save for something special: "I'm saving $10 each week for our beach trip!"

  • Give back: "Let's buy extra groceries for the food bank - picking what to give is part of our monthly budget"

4. Make it Fun! Who says money lessons can't be playful?

Try these fun ideas:

  • Grocery game: "Can you find pasta under $3? You're our family's money detective!"

  • Sticker chart: "Each time you save $1, add a sticker. At 10 stickers, you can buy that toy!"

  • Celebration: "You saved $20! Let's have a special dinner to celebrate being such a smart saver!"

Your Action Step This Week

Choose ONE money activity to do with your kids this week:

  • Set up those three jars

  • Play "store" with toys

  • Have them help you clip coupons

  • Start a simple savings chart for something they want

Remember, beautiful mama, you're not just teaching them about money - you're empowering them with life skills that will serve them forever.

The most important thing? Stay consistent and keep it positive!

Just like Amanda found with her boys, these early lessons create confident, capable adults who understand the value of a dollar.
