The Book I Never Thought I’d Read... 📚

What fiction taught me about slowing down, showing up, and surprising myself.

Hey Beautiful Mama 💕

Can I admit something to you?

For most of my adult life...I've always struggled with learning to love reading.

If I was going to read, it needed to have a return on investment. 😅 I wanted growth. I wanted insight. I wanted bullet points, breakthroughs, and a better business by the end of chapter five.

Reading for fun? That wasn't something I knew.

Maybe you’re like me—a high-achiever, goal-getter, Enneagram 3 through and through. Or maybe you’re in a season where your mind is racing at night, and your soul feels overstimulated by all the tabs open in your brain.

That was me too. Especially in the last nine months.

Since we moved, I’ve found myself doing a lot of things I never thought I’d do—or enjoy, for that matter. Something about that shift stirred up this beautiful season of unlearning for me. I started questioning the rules I’d made for myself. The ones that kept me stuck in “go-go-go” mode.

One day, I was talking to my sweet friend Lindsay about her nighttime routine during a really transitional season of her life. She mentioned she had started reading lighthearted fiction before bed. Just something sweet. Something that helped her unwind.

Something about that idea stayed with me.

That night, I ordered a novel off Amazon. My first fiction book in forever. And… I was shocked at how much I loved it.

Now, every night, I look forward to curling up with my book—not to learn, not to check something off a list, but to simply enjoy the moment. And if I’m being honest…it’s been healing something in me.

That younger version of Chelsey—the one who struggled with dyslexia and believed reading was only worth it if it led to productivity—she’s slowly being replaced by a woman who knows that joy, presence, and fun are productive in their own way.

So if you’re in a season of unlearning too…

If you’ve felt like life has been a little too loud or your mind’s a little too tired…

This is your permission slip to try something new. Break your own rules. Surprise yourself.

Whether it’s starting a garden, picking up a hobby, or—yes—even reading a fiction novel for no other reason than it makes you smile…you’re allowed to explore new parts of yourself. This part of unlearning has shown me the importance of evolving. We're all supposed to continue growing, and this is one way I never thought would make such an important impact on me.

And if you have a favorite lighthearted fiction book, hit reply and tell me! I’m building out a little book list, and I’d love to add yours to it. I added some of the books I’m loving >here< if you want to see! :)

 CEO TIP: Did You Know…

For all the women who are laser-focused on business growth right now, you might still be thinking:

This sounds sweet, Chelsey, but I don’t have time for bedtime novels.

Trust me—I get it.

But let me drop a little wisdom from Tony Robbins that completely changed how I saw this.

Tony teaches that fiction can actually help entrepreneurs grow—especially in areas like copywriting, connection, and creativity.

Here’s what he says:

“The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.”

Fiction unlocks imagination. It emotionalizes information. It teaches you to feel a lesson, not just understand it. And as entrepreneurs—storytelling, empathy, and connection? They’re our secret weapons. 🔥

So don’t be afraid to pick up a novel. You might just find the next big business idea—or at the very least, a little more peace at bedtime.

With love & curiosity,
Chelsey Diaz
